After Dee’s death in 1608 or 1609, the Book of Soyga passed through a few hands, including those of the antiquarian Elias Ashmole. For the next four centuries, it was believed lost forever. However, in 1994, while conducting research at the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford, historian Deborah Harkness made a remarkable discovery. The manuscript was not lost at all—it had simply been catalogued under a different title, Tractatus Astrologico Magicus . Very soon after, Harkness located a second copy in the British Library's Sloane collection. After 500 years, the legendary Book of Soyga had returned.
